5 Tips for Healthy Skin

How to Get Healthy Skin

Do you give your skin the love and care it deserves? If not, your skin has several ways of telling you it’s unhappy and needs some extra pampering. These signs include dullness, tightness, dryness, and uneven skin tone and texture, but knowing our tips for healthy skin can help you steer clear of them all.

1. Have a Proper Skincare Regimen

Have you nailed down your skincare routine? If you want to learn how to get healthy skin, a proper skincare regimen is the first step. Better yet, using vegan skincare is one of the best ways to keep your skin happy and healthy.

The amount of products in one’s skincare routine varies from person to person but there are certain products that should always be part of a skincare routine. Skincare staples include a gentle, plant-based cleanser and moisturizer along with additional products designed to target specific skin concerns.

Consider Your Skin Type

Because different people have different types of skin, be sure to use products specifically designed for your skin type. Those with normal or dry skin types should opt for hydrating products while those with oily or blemish-prone skin should use products designed to control sebum production, fight breakouts, and purify pores. If you have sensitive skin, you’ll want to minimize the amount of products you use to avoid irritation.

Regardless of your skin type, treat your skin gently. Don’t overdo it with the harsh chemicals, exfoliation, rough scrubs, etc. Avoid excessive pulling or tugging when you wash your face, apply skincare products, or remove your makeup. Establish a proper skincare routine to maintain a healthy complexion. Incorporate products formulated with anti-aging benefits such as boosting production of collagen, improving skin elasticity, and fighting fine lines.

2. Maintain a Healthy Diet

For anyone wondering how to get healthy skin, lifestyle changes will be necessary. First up: your diet. Ever scarf down a bag of chips and greasy fast food then wake up the next morning with a brand new breakout? Research has shown a link between diet and skin so if your goal is to get a healthy, natural glow, it’s time you reevaluate your eating habits.

Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables

Maintaining a well-balanced diet full of superfoods does wonders for the skin. Everyday, do your best to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, which are full of vitamins, antioxidants, and essential nutrients your skin needs to look its best. An easy way to ensure you’re feeding your body what it needs is by adding more colorful foods to your diet. Making every meal look like a rainbow not only helps improve the health of your skin, but also helps reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and more.

Lower Your Sugar Intake

Do you have a serious sweet tooth? You may want to rethink how you satisfy those sweet cravings because a high sugar intake can be a contributing factor when it comes to acne. Foods high in refined sugar cause insulin levels to rise, which increases sebum production and inflammation in the skin. This can lead to flare-ups and an increase in breakouts and may even promote aging of the skin. Trade the candy and sugary desserts for berries, which are one of the best foods for healthy skin.

3. Establish Healthy Sleeping Habits

One of our best tips for healthy skin is to make sure you’re getting your beauty sleep. In addition to increasing your risk of various health problems such as high blood pressure and a weakened immune system, poor sleeping habits can wreak havoc on your skin. Not getting enough sleep leads to increased stress hormones in the body, which increases inflammation and worsens existing skin conditions.

The solution? Catch some zzz’s! Your body’s cell rejuvenation process takes place while you sleep: growth hormones are released, which repair damaged cells and fight the signs of aging. With that being said, you may want to rethink pulling an all-nighter or staying up late to binge-watch your favorite show on Netflix. Make it a goal to set up healthy sleeping habits and get at least seven hours of sleep every night.

4. Exercise Regularly

Ever heard of a post-workout glow? It’s real. Increasing your heart rate through exercise improves blood flow by dilating blood vessels, which allows more nutrients and oxygen to support skin cells and helps flush out toxins and free radicals. This improved circulation can leave you with a bright and radiant complexion.

Wash Up Right After Your Workout

Sweating is your body’s natural way of regulating its temperature, but allowing sweat to sit on your skin for too long or staying in your tight, sweaty gym clothes for long periods of time allows the impurities and natural bacteria to start fermenting and settle back into your pores. This can then contribute to breakouts or cause irritation so it’s best to take a shower and wash your face immediately following your workout, especially for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Try keeping face wash in your gym bag, or if you prefer to wait until you get home, at least wash your hands or keep hand sanitizer with you to get rid of the grime and bacteria from any mats or gym equipment you touched. As an extra step, you should also remove your makeup before exercising to help prevent blocking your sweat glands and pores.

5. Protect Your Skin From the Sun

In case you didn’t know, sun protection should be part of your skincare routine. All. Year. Long. You may think that staying in the shade while outdoors is enough to protect yourself, but unfortunately it isn’t. Shade can’t completely shield you from indirect exposure to UV rays, which can bounce off of reflective surfaces like water and sand and pass through windows. Even on overcast and cloudy days, up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays reach the earth. Exposure to these UV rays can cause long-term damage to your skin such as premature aging and skin cancer, so be sure to apply broad spectrum sunscreen everyday and not just when you’re heading to the beach.

Other ways to protect your skin from the sun include:

    • Wear sunglasses that block UV rays
    • Wear a hat that protects all areas of the head, including the ears and neck
    • Avoid tanning beds

Remember to Be Patient

Although we’ve provided you with our top tips for healthy skin, it’s important to remember that you won’t see results overnight. It’ll take a lot of time, patience, and consistency. The road to a healthy, natural glow could be a long one, but it’s well worth it in the end.
