  • What is uneven skin tone?

Uneven skin tone refers to skin tone that has inconsistencies in color, usually in the form of redness, hyperpigmentation, and other discoloration. Of these, hyperpigmentation is the most common.

Hyperpigmentation refers to the overproduction of melanin, the natural pigment that gives skin its color. Prevention is essential, but there are things you can do to help get rid of an uneven skin tone such as wearing sunscreen, exfoliating, and using brightening skincare products.

  • What causes uneven skin tone?

There are four main causes of uneven skin tone: sun exposure, dead skin cells, hormonal changes, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

    • Sun exposure: Unprotected sun exposure can cause skin damage in the form of dark spots, premature fine lines and wrinkles, and even dry skin.
    • Dead skin cells: Your body naturally sheds dead skin cells but sometimes they linger on the surface of the skin, causing uneven skin tone and dullness.
    • Hormonal changes: Hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy or birth control pills can cause what’s known as melasma, a hormone-related form of hyperpigmentation that results in dark patches on the skin that are much larger than age spots or freckles.
    • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): After a breakout heals, it often results in PIH, a dark spot on the skin created by the body’s natural response to inflammation.

  • How do I get an even skin tone?

Some concealer or foundation can help cover up uneven skin tone but proper skincare is what will help you achieve a healthy, even complexion. Laser treatments can be effective, but here are a few more budget-friendly options:

    • Use brightening ingredients like vitamin C and licorice root. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that fights premature fine lines and wrinkle, aids in the skin’s regeneration process, and helps protect against sun damage. Licorice root has anti-inflammatory properties and combats discoloration by preventing dark spots from forming as well as fading existing ones.
    • Exfoliate regularly. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that prevent light from reflecting against your skin, getting in the way of a glowy complexion.
    • Protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen does more than prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer; it also helps fight signs of aging and promote an even skin tone so be sure to apply SPF every day of the year.

  • How often should I exfoliate?

How often you should exfoliate will depend on your skin type. Certain skin types are more tolerant of frequent exfoliation, while others aren’t. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you can exfoliate 2-3 times a week. If you have dry, normal, or sensitive skin, it’s best to exfoliate just once a week to avoid causing irritation or dryness.

  • Does exfoliation also help with uneven skin texture?

Yes! Uneven skin texture is commonly associated with a buildup of dead skin cells, which causes a rough, bumpy texture. By ridding the skin’s surface of dead skin cells, regular exfoliation promotes smooth and soft skin texture plus it helps with blemish control. Try using a chemical exfoliant like salicylic acid or glycolic acid, or an exfoliating face mask like our Brighten Up, Sunshine.

  • Does Floralux® help even skin tone?

Yes! Floralux® is our exclusive ingredient designed to help visibly reduce redness and hyperpigmentation, even skin tone and texture, combat bad bacteria, fight signs of aging, and promote collagen health. Floralux® can be found in many of our products, but our signature green Restore gel contains the highest concentration of it.
